Direct Transport Test Tool

The goal of the SITE Direct Transport test tool is to provide a mechanism for Health IT developers and implementers to test their Direct implementation by sending and receiving messages to and from the SITE Direct test tools.

Prepare to exchange Direct messages with the Sandbox

Overview

Directions

  • Publish your Direct certificates (Organization or Address bound) per the Direct specifications.

  • If you are a member of Direct Trust production bundle, you can exchange messages with interop@direct.hhs.gov using instructions provided further below.

  • If you are not a member of Direct Trust production bundle, exchange Trust Anchors with SITE following Trust Anchor Exchange Instructions.

  • Use the instructions in the "Send Direct Message using SITE Trust Anchor" or "Send Direct Message using Direct Trust Production Bundle" features below to send messages and verify.

  • Use the information in the "Receive Direct Message" feature below to receive messages from the sandbox to your system.

Trust Anchor Exchange Instructions

Directions

  • Download the Trust Anchor for the Sandbox (direct.site.healthit.gov Certificate) and import the trust anchor into your trust store.

  • Please upload your Trust Anchor by selecting your Trust Anchor. If you need to replace the Trust Anchor, just perform another upload and the previous one will be replaced.

  • Uploading the Trust Anchor causes an update to the Trust Bundle of direct.site.healthit.gov which is refreshed every five minutes and is only used for testing purposes. Once a Trust Anchor is uploaded, users can test with the Direct sandbox after five minutes.

Send Direct Message using SITE Trust Anchor

When you exchanged your Trust Anchors with SITE and want to validate your Direct installation, send Direct messages to the end point listed below

  • provider1@direct.site.healthit.gov

Upon successful receipt of the message, the Direct Transport Test Tool will send an MDN(Message Disposition Notification) back to the sender's email address. The content of the message can be anything and is not validated or used by the SITE. To validate if a message was received from your test system, enter your Direct From address which you used to send the message below and search for messages. The test tool will display the last message received from the Direct From address entered if any exist.

Send Direct Message using Direct Trust Production Bundle

When you are part of the Direct Trust Production Bundle and would like to validate your Direct installation, send Direct messages to the end point listed below

  • interop@direct.hhs.gov

Receive Direct Message from SITE

Send messages from the Sandbox to your system

  • Choose your own content: Developers can use their own files as the payload of the Direct message sent from the Sandbox. This provides the ability to verify the file they chosen and that the contents were decrypted appropriately.

  • Choose pre-canned content: Provides a list of files that you can choose from as the payload of the Direct message.

  • Enter your end point name: The name of the Direct address where you would like to receive the message. Ensure that the Trust Anchor corresponding to the end point has already been uploaded.

  • Once the above fields are populated, hit the send message button. You will receive a message from provider1@direct.site.healthit.gov to your system with the content you have uploaded.
